Richard Plant

Richard Plant, originally Richard Plaut, was a German-American Germanist and writer. In 1933, he emigrated to Switzerland to continue his studies, and in 1935 received his doctorate in Basel with a dissertation on Arthur Schnitzler. He moved to the United States in 1938. From 1947, he taught German literature at City College of New York, first as a lecturer, then as an associate professor from 1957 and a full professor from 1970. His publications included detective novels written with friends, the children’s book “Die Kiste mit dem großen S” (1936), and “The Pink Triangle: The Nazi War against Homosexuals” (1986), a study of the Nazi persecution of homosexuals. The German edition appeared in 1991 as “Rosa Winkel.”
