Leo Meter, whose full name was Leopold August Longin Meter, was a German stage designer. He studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Heinrich Campendonk and worked at Berlin’s Junge Volksbühne from 1932. After the Nazis came to power, he was arrested as a member of the ensemble, imprisoned for several months in Brauweiler concentration camp, and banned from working in his profession. In 1934 he fled to the Netherlands, where he initially lived as an illegal immigrant. In 1936 he married Elisabeth Plaut, a music teacher who had fled Germany, in Brussels.
