Raymond Chandler (1888–1959) was an American writer and screenwriter. Born in Chicago, he grew up in England and worked, among other occupations, for the Ministry of the Navy, as a journalist, and as an accountant. From 1932 onward, he devoted himself to writing crime fiction and screenplays. He is best known for his novels featuring Philip Marlowe, a melancholic but moral private detective; the novels became classics of crime literature and were adapted for film several times. Chandler received the Edgar Allan Poe Award in 1955.
