Author · 11 books

Raul Hilberg (1926–2007) was an American historian and Holocaust scholar of Austrian-Jewish origin. In 1939, he emigrated to the United States with his parents via Cuba. He studied, among others, under Franz Neumann and was among the first scholars to work with German documents from the Nazi era that had been transferred to the United States. Hilberg taught political science at the University of Vermont in Burlington and became professor emeritus there in 1991. His dissertation, “The Destruction of the European Jews,” is regarded as a standard work on the history of the Holocaust. His honors included the Geschwister-Scholl Prize and the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, both awarded in 2002.
