Rafael Chirbes (1949–2015) was a Spanish writer. Born in Tabernes de Valldigna, he initially worked as a literary and film critic for various magazines after completing his studies. His novels include The Hunter’s Shot (1996), The Long March (1998), The Beautiful Writing (1999), The Fall of Madrid (2000), Old Friends (2002), Crematorium (2008) and On the Shore (2014). He received Spain’s National Critics’ Prize for both Crematorium and On the Shore. His works have been translated into many languages.
