Rafael Cardoso (born 1964 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian art historian and writer. He studied art history at Johns Hopkins University, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where he earned his doctorate. From 1996 to 2012, he was a professor at universities in Rio de Janeiro. He also curated exhibitions, including “From the Margin to the Edge: Brazilian Art and Design in the 21st Century” at Somerset House in London in 2012. Cardoso has published nonfiction on the history of Brazilian art and design as well as several novels. His works published in German include “Sechzehn Frauen. Geschichten aus Rio” (2013) and “Das Vermächtnis der Seidenraupen. Geschichte einer Familie” (2016), which was based on research into the history of his great-grandfather, Hugo Simon.
