Rachel Carson

Rachel Carson (1907–1964) was a biologist and writer. After studying marine biology, she worked as a scientist for a United States fisheries agency. She gained international recognition for books including *The Sea Around Us*, *The Edge of the Sea*, and especially *Silent Spring*. In recognition of her work as an author and scientist, she was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
