Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) was an Indian writer in Bengali, as well as a poet, composer, painter, and educator. He studied in England and subsequently managed his family’s estate for several years. He later founded a school that he expanded into a university. In addition to poetry, he wrote novels, short stories, essays, and plays. In 1913, he became the first non-European recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded in particular for his poetry collection Gitanjali. Two songs he composed are now the national anthems of India and Bangladesh.
