Pjotr Pawlensky was born in 1984 in Leningrad, now Saint Petersburg. He studied monumental painting at the College of Art in Saint Petersburg and worked as a performance artist and editor of the online contemporary art journal “Political Propaganda.” He became known for actions including “Seam” (2012), “Carcass” and “Fixation” (both 2013), “Freedom” and “Separation” (both 2014), and “Threat” (2015), during which he set fire to the door of a Russian security service building. The Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent, awarded to him in 2016, was revoked later that same year.
