Pierre Bourdieu (1930–2002) was a French sociologist. After studying at the École Normale Supérieure, he worked as an assistant in Algiers and later taught, among other institutions, at the École Pratique des Hautes Études and the Collège de France in Paris. His early ethnological work examined Kabyle society in Algeria. His best-known works include *Outline of a Theory of Practice*, *Distinction* and *Practical Reason*. Bourdieu received the Médaille d’or of the French National Centre for Scientific Research in 1993 and the Ernst Bloch Prize in 1997.
