Philippe Sands, born in 1960, is a lawyer and professor of international law. He served as director of the Centre for International Courts and Tribunals at University College London and helped formulate the indictment against Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. His notable books include *East West Street* (*Rückkehr nach Lemberg*) and *The Ratline* (*Die Rattenlinie – ein Nazi auf der Flucht*). *East West Street* received the Baillie Gifford Prize and the Wingate Literary Prize and was named Book of the Year at the British Book Awards.
