Paul Maar (born in 1937 in Schweinfurt) is a German author, illustrator and playwright known primarily for children’s and young adult literature. After studying painting and art history, he initially worked as a teacher and art educator before devoting himself to freelance creative work. He wrote more than 40 books, as well as plays, radio dramas and screenplays, and illustrated many of his own works. He is best known for his stories about the Sams. His literary work received numerous awards, including the German Youth Literature Prize for his complete oeuvre, the Brothers Grimm Prize and the Austrian State Prize.
