Paul Jandl was born in Vienna in 1962 and studied German and philosophy. He worked as a feuilleton journalist and literary critic for Austrian daily newspapers and, from 1994, for the *Neue Zürcher Zeitung*. He also spent several years working in the editorial departments of literary publishers and held teaching positions in literary criticism at German and Austrian universities. From 2009 to 2013, he served on the jury of the Ingeborg Bachmann Competition. He received the Austrian State Prize for Literary Criticism in 2004 and was a Max Kade Critic in Residence at Washington University in St. Louis in 2008.
