Paul Ekman (born 1934) is an American psychologist who was a professor at the University of California, San Francisco. He became known as one of the leading experts on nonverbal communication and was named by the American Psychological Association as one of the most influential psychologists of the 20th century. His work focused on the expression and recognition of emotions as well as the study of deception. The television series *Lie to Me* and its main character were inspired by his work, and Ekman served as the series’ scientific adviser.
