Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche (“Precious Teacher”), was an Indian meditation master of the eighth century. He is regarded as the founder of the Nyingma tradition, the oldest Buddhist tradition in Tibet, and introduced tantric Buddhist practices to Tibet. He also completed the construction of Samye, regarded as Tibet’s first Buddhist monastery. In the Tibetan tradition, he is revered as the “second Buddha.”
