Noam Chomsky (born 1928 in Philadelphia) was an American linguist and philosopher. He taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he later became professor emeritus of linguistics and philosophy. His work had a major influence on modern linguistics. He also published numerous books on political, social, and philosophical subjects and became known as a critic of U.S. foreign policy. Chomsky received numerous honorary doctorates and awards, including the Kyoto Prize and the Helmholtz Medal.
