Nelly Sachs

Nelly Sachs, whose given name was Leonie Sachs, was born in Berlin in 1891. The German writer and poet began publishing poetry in the 1920s. Her work addressed National Socialism, her Jewish heritage, Hasidism and Kabbalah. In 1940, she emigrated to Sweden with her mother. She received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 1965 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1966 for her lyrical and dramatic work. Nelly Sachs died in Stockholm in 1970.
