Hilde Domin

Hilde Domin (1909–2006) was a German poet. She studied law, philosophy, economics and political science, and earned her doctorate in Florence in 1935. After the Nazi seizure of power, she spent 22 years in exile, first in England and later in Santo Domingo. She worked there as a university lecturer and was also active as a translator and photographer. Her debut collection, “Nur eine Rose als Stütze,” was published in 1959. Her many honors included the Nelly Sachs Prize, the Friedrich Hölderlin Prize, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Literature Prize and, in 1999, the Jakob Wassermann Prize.
