Milton Sanford Mayer

Milton Sanford Mayer (1908–1986) was an American journalist, columnist, and commentator. He left the University of Chicago before completing his studies, yet obtained a position there as an assistant professor in the mid-1930s. As a freelance journalist, he wrote for publications including the Saturday Evening Post, The Progressive, and Harper’s. A committed pacifist, Mayer became known nationally when, at the outbreak of war, he publicly declared himself a conscientious objector. His statement appeared under the title “I Think I’ll Sit This One Out.”
