Michael Stavaric (born in 1972 in Brno, then Czechoslovakia) is a writer, translator and lecturer. He studied Czech and Slavic studies as well as journalism and communication sciences at the University of Vienna. His work includes novels, children’s and young adult books, plays, essays and poetry, including “Gotland,” “Fremdes Licht” and “Balthasar Blutberg.” His awards include the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize, the Austrian State Prize for Children’s and Young Adult Literature, the Children’s Book Prize of the City of Vienna and the Hohenems Literature Prize. As a young man, he wanted to become a marine biologist; his interest in marine life also finds expression in his books.
