Michael Sommer

Michael Sommer is a historian specializing in ancient history. He studied history, classical philology, political science, and Near Eastern archaeology, and conducted research and taught in Oxford and Liverpool, among other places. In 2012, he was appointed professor of ancient history at Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg. His research focuses on the Roman Empire, the eastern Mediterranean, and the Phoenicians. His publications include Economic History of Antiquity, The Phoenicians, and Dark Rome: The Secret Life of the Romans.
