Michael Crichton (1942–2008) was born in Chicago and studied medicine at Harvard University. He was an American novelist, screenwriter, and filmmaker. His best-known novels include *Jurassic Park*, *Timeline*, *Next*, *Sphere*, *Prey*, and *The Andromeda Strain*. His work often drew on current developments in science and technology. Crichton also created the television series *ER* and the film *Westworld*. He died in November 2008.
