Matthieu Aikins

Matthieu Aikins is a journalist and author. Since 2008, he reported from Afghanistan and the Middle East for publications including The New Yorker, The New York Times, Harper’s, and GQ. He was a fellow at the Type Media Center, New America, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the American Academy in Berlin. His work received numerous awards. His notable work includes “Inside the Fall of Kabul,” a report published in The New York Times Magazine in December 2021 about the failure of Western forces’ withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. Aikins grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and earned a master’s degree in Near Eastern Studies from New York University.
