Mascha Kaleko

Mascha Kaléko (1907–1975) was born in Galicia to Jewish parents and grew up in Berlin. In the 1920s, she became part of the literary circles surrounding Berlin’s Romanisches Café and published poems in newspapers, including the Vossische Zeitung and the Berliner Tageblatt. Her literary breakthrough came in 1933 with Lyrisches Stenogrammheft. She emigrated to the United States in 1938 and later moved to Israel. She died in Zurich on January 21, 1975, and is regarded as one of the major German-language poets of the 20th century.
