Marina Abramović (born 1946 in Belgrade) is a Serbian artist and a pioneer of performance art. She began her career in Belgrade in the early 1970s. Her work explores the relationship between performer and audience, as well as the limits of the body and mind. In 1997, she received the Golden Lion for Best Artist at the Venice Biennale. In 2010, she presented “The Artist Is Present” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, performing for more than 700 hours. In 2012, she founded the Marina Abramović Institute, a platform for immaterial and long-duration work.
