Marie Jalowicz Simon was born in Berlin in 1922, the daughter of a Jewish lawyer. During the Nazi period, she survived by living in hiding in Berlin. After 1945, she became a professor of ancient literature and cultural history at Humboldt University in Berlin. Shortly before her death, at the request of her son Hermann Simon, she recorded her account of survival. Irene Stratenwerth and Hermann Simon used these recordings to prepare the published version of her memoirs. Marie Jalowicz Simon died in Berlin in 1998.
