Maria Nooke (born 1958) studied sociology, psychology and education after completing training in religious education and working in church-based programs for children and young people. From 1999 onward, she held research and leadership positions at the Berlin Wall Memorial, including deputy director of the Stiftung Berliner Mauer and head of the Marienfelde Refugee Center Memorial. She received her doctorate in 2007. Nooke has published works on Nazi history, opposition in the GDR and the history of German division, including “Der verratene Tunnel. Geschichte einer verhinderten Flucht im geteilten Berlin” (2002).
