Margaret Laurence

Margaret Laurence (1926–1987) was a Canadian writer. She was born in Neepawa, Manitoba, and wanted to become a writer from an early age. In 1947, she married a civil engineer and lived with him first in England and later in Africa. Her earliest writing focused on Africa. Her major prose works, however, are set in the fictional Canadian town of Manawaka, which was modeled on her hometown of Neepawa. She received the Governor General’s Award, one of Canada’s major literary prizes, for the novel “Glücklichere Tage.”
