Madeline Miller, born in Boston in 1978, grew up in New York and Philadelphia. She studied Classics at Brown University and subsequently taught Latin, Greek, and Shakespeare for more than ten years in Cambridge. In 2012, she received the Orange Prize for Fiction for her debut novel, The Song of Achilles. The novel and her second work, Circe, became international bestsellers. In her fiction, Miller draws on Greek mythology and gives lesser-known or misunderstood figures their own voices. Her other works include Galatea, a retelling of the myth of Pygmalion.
