Lucius Burckhardt

Lucius Burckhardt (1925–2003) was a Swiss sociologist with a doctorate in the social sciences. He taught, among other places, at the Ulm School of Design, in Zurich, and at the University of Kassel. From 1962 to 1972 he edited the journal Werk, and from 1976 to 1983 he served as chairman of the German Werkbund. Together with his wife, Annemarie, he developed Promenadology, or the science of walking, an approach concerned with the perception of landscapes and cities. In 1955 he co-published Achtung, die Schweiz with Max Frisch. Burckhardt also held academic positions in Saarbrücken and Weimar. His work was recognized, among other distinctions, with the Hessian Culture Prize in 1994, the Federal Prize for Design Promotion in 1995, and the Swiss Design Prize in 2001.
