Louis Sachar (born 1954 in East Meadow, New York) is an American author of children’s books. He studied economics and then law, and worked part-time as a lawyer from 1980 to 1989. His experience supervising children at an elementary school inspired his first book, “Sideways Stories from Wayside School,” in 1976. Among his best-known works is the novel “Holes” (1998), which received the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and the Newbery Medal.
