Louis Malle

Louis Malle (1932–1995) was a French film director and screenwriter associated with the French New Wave. After abandoning studies in political science and beginning film studies, he worked as an assistant and cameraman for oceanographer and documentary filmmaker Jacques-Yves Cousteau. In 1957, Malle achieved his first major success with “Elevator to the Gallows,” featuring a soundtrack by Miles Davis. His other notable films include “Viva Maria!,” “The Fire Within,” and “Lacombe, Lucien.” His 1987 film “Au revoir, les enfants” was nominated for and received several national and international awards. Malle was born in Thumeries, France, and died in Los Angeles in 1995.
