Leoluca Orlando

Leoluca Orlando (born 1947) is an Italian politician and lawyer. He served as mayor of Palermo from 1985 to 1990 and from 1993 to 2000, and his actions against the Mafia helped initiate what became known as the “Palermitan Spring.” He also served as a member of the European Parliament and the Italian Chamber of Deputies. Orlando received, among other distinctions, the Goethe Medal, the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize of the City of Osnabrück (2005), the Konrad Adenauer Prize (2008), the German Sustainability Award (2013), and the Heine Prize of the City of Düsseldorf (2018).
