Leo Spitzer

Leo Spitzer (1887–1960) was born in Vienna and was a Jewish Romance philologist and linguist. He taught at numerous German universities. From 1933 onward, he continued his academic career in exile, first in Istanbul and later at a university in Baltimore, United States. Over the course of his work, he moved closer to the linguistic approaches of Karl Vossler. Spitzer died in Italy in 1960.
