Lars Gustafsson

Lars Gustafsson (1936–2016) was a Swedish writer, poet, and philosopher. He studied mathematics and philosophy in Uppsala and Oxford and earned a doctorate in philosophy in 1961. From 1983 to 2006, he taught German studies and philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin. From the 1960s onward, he published numerous novels and poetry collections, including The Dean, Frau Sorgedahls schöne weiße Arme, and Das Feuer und die Töchter. His work received many awards; he was awarded the Goethe Medal in 2009 and the Thomas Mann Prize in 2015. Gustafsson died in Stockholm in 2016.
