British writer Kevin Brooks was born in 1959 in Pinhoe near Exeter, England. He studied in Birmingham and London and earned a BA in Cultural Studies from Aston University in 1983. Before turning to writing, he worked in various jobs, including as a petrol-station attendant, a zoo shop assistant and a crematorium worker. His debut novel, Martyn Pig, was published in 2002. Brooks wrote numerous young adult novels as well as thrillers for adults. His work received several awards, including the German Youth Literature Prize for Lucas and The Road of the Dead, and the Carnegie Medal for The Bunker Diary.
