Kerstin Decker was born in Leipzig in 1962. She initially trained as a sales clerk before studying journalism at Leipzig University and, among other subjects, philosophy at Humboldt University of Berlin; she completed her studies with a dissertation in 1994. She worked as a journalist for the Tagesspiegel and as a columnist and critic for the taz. Decker has published numerous books, including biographies of Lou Andreas-Salomé, Heinrich Heine, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Else Lasker-Schüler, Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche, and Franziska zu Reventlow, as well as the dual biography Nietzsche und Wagner.
