Kenzaburo Oe

Kenzaburō Ōe (1935–2023) was a Japanese writer and literary critic. He studied Romance languages and literature at the University of Tokyo and wrote novels, short stories, and essays. He received the Akutagawa Prize in 1958 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1994. His notable works include *The Silent Cry*, *Teach Us to Outgrow Our Madness*, *Somersault*, and *Goodbye to Books!* In several autobiographical works, including *A Healing Family*, he wrote about life with his son Hikari, who was born with a cranial abnormality.
