Keith Johnstone

Keith Johnstone (born 1933 in England) is known as a major influence on modern improvisational theatre. From 1936 to 1966, he worked as a dramaturg at London’s Royal Court Theatre, where he led a writers’ workshop. He taught at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and later held a professorship. Johnstone developed improvisational formats including Theatresports, Gorilla Theatre, Micetro and Life Game, founded the improvisational group Theatre Machine, and served as artistic director of Calgary’s Loose Moose Theatre. In 1998, he founded the International Theatresports Institute. His key publications include Improvisation and the Theatre and Theatre Games: Spontaneity, Improvisation and the Theatre.
