Katherine Scholes was born in Tanzania and moved to Australia as a child. After studying education, she worked as a teacher on the Flinders Islands in 1981 and later became involved in film productions. Her first children’s book, “Sam’s Whale,” was published in Australia in 1984. It was shortlisted for the Australian Children’s Book Award and received the Whitley Book Award in 1986. Scholes also worked as a documentary filmmaker, and her books have been translated into numerous languages.
