Jutta Bauer (born 1955 in Hamburg) studied at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and Applied Sciences. After graduating, she initially illustrated schoolbooks and children’s books, then worked for seven years as a cartoonist for the magazine Brigitte. She became known as an illustrator and author of picture books and children’s books, including The Queen of Colors, Crybaby and Grandpa’s Angel. Together with Kirsten Boie, she created the Juli picture-book series. Bauer received the German Children’s and Young Adult Literature Prize for Crybaby and, in 2009, its Special Prize for Illustration for her complete oeuvre. In 2010, she was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award.
