Josephine Tey was the pseudonym of the Scottish author Elizabeth MacKintosh (1896–1952). She was best known for her crime novels, including the books featuring detective Alan Grant, and also wrote plays. She used the pseudonym Gordon Daviot for her theatrical work. Before becoming a writer, she trained as a physical education teacher. Tey led a notably private life and avoided public appearances. Her novel »Alibi für einen König« was named the best crime novel of all time by the British Crime Writers’ Association.
