Joseph Kiermeier-Debre (born 1946) is a German scholar of literature, theatre and art. He studied German studies, philosophy, theatre studies and art history, earned his doctorate in Münster and completed his habilitation in Gießen in 1986. He subsequently taught modern German literary history at the University of Munich. He also directed the Antoniter-/Strigel Museum in Memmingen and founded and directed the MEWO Kunsthalle. As an author and editor, he has published numerous works on literature and art from the Baroque period to the present, including books on Goethe’s and Schiller’s women. From 1997, he edited the dtv Library of First Editions. Two of his books received first prizes from the Stiftung Buchkunst in the competition for the most beautiful books.
