Joseph Brodsky

Joseph Brodsky (1940–1996) was a Soviet poet born in Leningrad who later emigrated to the United States. Following a trial for “parasitism,” he was sentenced to five years of forced labor and expelled from the Soviet Union in 1972. He emigrated to the United States with the support of the poet W. H. Auden. In 1987, Brodsky was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
