Danilo Kiš (1935–1989) was born in Subotica, in present-day Serbia, to a Hungarian Jewish father and a Montenegrin mother. He is regarded as one of the major European authors of the second half of the 20th century. His work includes novels, short stories, poetry and essays. Kiš also worked as a translator from Hungarian, French and Russian. Among other honors, he received the Yugoslav literary prize Ninova Nagrada, the Ivo Andrić Prize and the Grand Aigle d’Or. He died in Paris.
