Jorge Semprún (1923–2011) was a Spanish writer, screenwriter, and politician. In 1943, as a member of the French Resistance, he was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to Buchenwald concentration camp. After 1945, he was involved in the resistance against the Franco regime and at times worked underground under the pseudonym Federico Sánchez. He was expelled from the Communist Party in 1964 and subsequently devoted himself primarily to writing. He also became known as a screenwriter, notably for Alain Resnais’s La guerre est finie (1966), Z (1968), and L’aveu (1970). From 1988 to 1991, Semprún served as Spain’s minister of culture.
