John Edward Williams (1922–1994) was an American writer and university teacher. He grew up in Texas, worked as a journalist, and served as a volunteer in the U.S. Army Air Forces during the Second World War, including in India and Burma. During his service, he began his first novel, *Nothing but the Night*, which was published in 1948. After studying English literature, Williams taught at the University of Missouri and later at the University of Denver, where he taught creative writing and English literature until his retirement. He published novels and volumes of poetry. His novel *Augustus* received the National Book Award in 1973.
