John Fowles (1926–2005) was an English writer. He studied Romance languages at Oxford and initially worked as a teacher of English literature in France and as an English teacher at a boarding school on the Greek island of Spetses. His first novel, The Collector (1963), brought him wide recognition. His major works also include The Magus (1966), The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1969), and the story collection The Ebony Tower (1974). Fowles’s fiction combines psychological and philosophical themes with questions of illusion and reality.
