Jerzy Kosinski

Jerzy Kosinski (1933–1991), born Józef Lewinkopf in Poland, emigrated to the United States in 1957. During the Second World War, he was hidden under a false name by a Catholic family. He worked as a writer, actor, and screenwriter. He became internationally known for his novel *The Painted Bird* (1965). His literary work received several awards, including the National Book Award.
