Jenny Erpenbeck (born 1967 in East Berlin) is a German writer. She first trained as a bookbinder and studied theatre studies and music theatre direction. Before beginning her literary career, she directed operas. Her debut, the novella *The Old Child*, was published in 1999, followed by novels, short stories, essays and plays, including *Visitation*, *Go, Went, Gone* and *Kairos*. Her work has received numerous awards, including the Thomas Mann Prize, the Uwe Johnson Prize, the Hans Fallada Prize, the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, the Premio Strega Europeo and the Stefan Heym Prize. In 2024, *Kairos* won the International Booker Prize.
